HOWARD THURMAN

From facing financial constraints in his early years to becoming a valedictorian at Morehouse College, Howard Thurman's life took a transformative path. An encounter at a train station, where an anonymous stranger supported his journey, left an indelible mark, steering Thurman towards a lifetime commitment to human rights. His educational journey, faculty roles at prominent institutions, and pivotal involvement in non-violent direct action underscore Thurman's impact. Co-founding an interracial congregation in San Francisco in 1944 and later becoming the first African American Dean at a predominantly white institution, Thurman's vision was one of unity. Today, Boston University remains dedicated to realizing Thurman's timeless vision of a community marked by openness, generosity, and fellowship, transcending divisive barriers.
